Welcome to your overview of the category definitions associated with the AVS-01 Alarm Validation Scoring Standard. By fully understanding the scoring categories, you will directly impact a successful implementation of the AVS-01 standard. This module will review each category of alarm level in more detail to help you understand the classification process. Because AVS-01 focuses only on intrusion alarms any references to alarm events moving forward are specific to intrusion events.

Having a consistent method of alarm scoring allows you to assess unauthorized human activity and identify a potential threat level, which in turn enhances officer safety, helps law enforcement with resource allocation, and prioritizes Calls for Service to the Emergency Communications Center or ECC.  Another term still used for ECCs is Public Safety Answering Point or PSAP. In this module we will use the term ECC throughout to reference ECCs and PSAPs.

“By implementing the AVS-01 Standard, monitoring centers can ensure consistency in alarm
classification, enabling seamless communication with ECC Telecommunicators and facilitating informed
decision-making during alarm response. This voluntary standard establishes a reliable and scalable
metric for assessing alarm events, contributing to enhanced situational awareness, officer safety, and
resource allocation.”
